Traditional training or microlearning? Complements, not competitors

Training, mLearning, microlearning and gamification share a common goal: helping employees learn effectively.

Providing timely training for teams, with the right priorities, is something industries need to pay close attention to. Training should be seen as an opportunity for business improvement, and there are different formats and delivery methods available.
Here, we will call what we have traditionally known as training “traditional training.” As a general rule, it consists of in-person sessions that require lengthy periods of time and use presentation-based, informational approaches.
Traditional training
The great advantage of traditional training is its ability to address highly complex topics that require specific professionals as trainers. Because professionals deliver it, content can also be personalized and direct interaction is possible.
However, this conventional approach has some disadvantages. Implementation is complex because bringing several people together with suitable professionals requires considerable operational effort. In addition, content cannot be updated quickly, as training takes place at a particular time and location.
MLearning as a learning alternative
An alternative to traditional training is mLearning, or mobile learning. This approach is ideal for specific, concrete topics that can be addressed in a short time and do not require in-person attendance.
***mLearning* enables training through mobile devices, such as a phone, in short periods, with activities lasting no more than 5 minutes. Content can remain available** to groups that do not need to meet physically to learn, positively affecting operating and implementation costs.
It is also important to add that content can be updated whenever needed, allowing changes and additions as often as necessary.
Finally, digital microlearning makes it possible to implement playful, challenging activities using game strategies (gamification), creating more engaging and relevant experiences for today's employees.
Traditional training and mLearning should therefore complement each other. Used well, both can bring major benefits to the teams experiencing them and deliver excellent results for their companies.
