Microlearning is one of the learning trends the pandemic left behind: a way to learn anytime, anywhere…

With long lockdowns, closed offices and breaks in work, online education has grown at an unprecedented rate. One of the main learning trends of 2020 will be microlearning.

This means learning through small units of knowledge, providing specific information to achieve a small learning objective. Its advantages will undoubtedly keep it popular, particularly in corporate learning.

That is because *microlearning* can take the form of a fairly informal talk, a segment of a structured eLearning course, or even a performance-support module. Wherever and however it is implemented, it shares two things: brevity, its defining feature, and a “single idea”—content limited to one specific topic, idea or concept.

Microlearning, social learning and gamification

Microlearning can be delivered in different ways, but mobile delivery has the greatest impact. Mobile access anytime, anywhere makes learning on the go easier and more accessible. It almost seems obvious, since this device has become indispensable: we live with our phones from the moment their alarms wake us in the morning until we go to bed. Microlearning is therefore ideal for learning a new concept or skill while waiting in traffic or standing in line at the supermarket.

When mobile microlearning also includes social learning, it deepens and enriches the experience through interaction and collaboration. The same is true of tools such as gamification, which make the experience fun and engaging. Adding data analysis also allows companies to keep a complete record of knowledge gaps and how acquired knowledge and habits are put into practice.

Companies will increasingly explore microlearning to train employees, making it a powerful way to train in the real world without the difficulties and limitations of more traditional approaches.
